Step by Step Guide to Hajj and Umrah

Step by Step Guide to Hajj and Umrah by Shaykh Tauqeer Shah | Pubished on May 19, 2024

The Month of Hajj is the season of Allah’s special mercy and blessings. In this month Allah has made Hajj obligatory upon Muslims. It is one of the best forms of worship. Muslims who have the means and ability should perform Hajj once in a lifetime. Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Quran in Surah Aale-Imran verse #97:

وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ حِجُّ ٱلۡبَيۡتِ مَنِ ٱسۡتَطَاعَ إِلَيۡهِ سَبِيلاً۬ۚ وَمَنْ كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِىٌّ عَنِ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِيْنَؕ

“And pilgrimage to the house is a bounded duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who have means and whosoever disbelieves, then Allah is free and independent from the entire universe.”

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) explains the importance and virtues of Hajj by stating:

      • “Verily Allah has declared Hajj compulsory upon you, therefore perform Hajj” (Muslim).

      • “The reward for an accepted Hajj is nothing but paradise” (Bukhari & Muslim).

      • “Whoever performs Hajj and does not engage himself in bad language or actions, then he returns from Hajj as pure and free from sins as on the day on which his  mother gave birth to him” (Bukhari & Muslim).

    Preparation before your departure:

Hajj is a journey of a lifetime, and like no other journey you have ever undertaken. If you have already performed Hajj, please note that each Hajj is unique unto itself.  So make sure you have the energy, presence of mind, and consistency to keep your focus on the fact that this is a journey you are making for Allah (SWT) and you may or may not be able to perform this again. So optimize it, in the best way you can. It is recommended that you put your affairs in order before departure.  Make up with all the people you have any friction or unpleasant exchange, and ask forgiveness of everyone. Make a will and let your loved ones know of everything that is important. Here are some tips for you to follow:

    • Make sure to buy comfortable shoes. Try to get “Gel Inserts” for shoes.
    • Make sure you shop for unscented material while in Ihram. Buy a small bottle of unscented Vaseline, to lubricate your inner thighs so they don’t get chaffed by the excessive walking you have to do. Baby wipes/Kleenex – unscented to wash hands with where no water is available.
    • Take a GSM Phone with you. Make sure your mobile phone is internationally unlocked. Check with your carrier for international settings.
    • Luggage: Take 2 large suitcases, even if empty, as you may need storage space to bring back things for yourself and friends.

    Miqat – Boundaries of Makkah
    • Miqat is the boundary of Makkah.
    • Ihram should be worn before you cross the Miqat.
    • The restriction of Ihram will start once you make the intention.
    • If you are traveling from North America, you need to wear ihram and make intention an hour before your arrival to Jeddah on a direct flight.
    • If you are going via UAE or Qatar, you should wear Ihram and make intention before your departure flight to Jeddah.

    Wearing Ihram and making Intention:

    • One should take a shower with the intention for Ihram. If taking a shower is not possible, then Wudu is enough.
    • Wear Ihram by wrapping 2 unsowed white sheets or towels. Wrap one sheet around the lower part of the body, and the other sheet on the upper part of the body. Ladies have to wear regular dress, covering the whole body except hands and face.
    • Perform 2 RakatSalat with the intention of Ihram. After finishing the 2 Rakats, make the intention. This will depend on what type of Hajj a person is intending to perform.

Restrictions of Ihram. One must avoid all of the following things while wearing Ihram:

    • Do not put a hat on the head nor cover it with any cloth. (For men only).
    • Do not wear shoes that fully cover the top portion of the feet. (For men only).
    • Avoid using perfume.
    • Do not cut hair or trim nails.
    • While in Ihram one should always be reading Talbiya, 4 Kalimahs, the Holy Quran and any kind of good Dua’as.
    • Avoid unnecessary conversations and make Dhikr throughout.

    Intention for Umrah:

“Allahumma Inni Ureedul Umrata Fa Yassirha li Wa Taqabbalha Minni.”

Translation: “O Allah I intend to perform Umrah so make it easy for me and accept it from me.”

    Intention for Hajj:

“Allahumma Inni Ureedul Hajja wal Umrata Fa Yassirhuma li Wa Taqabbalhuma Minni.”

Translation:“O Allah I intend to perform Hajj and Umrah so make it easy for me and accept it from me.”

    “AllahummaInniUreedulHajjawalUmrata Fa Yassirhuma li WaTaqabbalhumaMinni.”

Translation:“O Allah I intend to perform Hajj and Umrah so make it easy for me and accept it from me.”

    Talbiya:

“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk. Labbayka La Sharika laka Labbayk. Innal Hamda Wan Ni’mata laka wal Mulk. La Sharika lak.”

Translation: “Here I am O Allah, (in response to Your call), here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise, grace and sovereignty belongs to You. You have no partner.”

After making the intention and wearing Ihram, one should recite the Talbiya, Durood and Salawat on the Prophet (PBUH) and make any Dhikr. Preferred Dhikr during Ihram is the Talbiya.

    The Performance of Umrah

    Umrah consist of:

    • Tawaf of Ka’ba
    • 2 Rakah behind Maqam Ibrahim
    • Zamzam water
    • Sai between Safa and Marwah
    • Trim or shave hair

    Tawaf of Ka’ba

Tawaf means seven circles around the Ka’ba. Seven circles make one Tawaf. Do 3 things before you start Tawaf:

    • Stop reciting Talbiya.
    • Put the upper side of Ihram on the left shoulder by taking the other side under the right armpit. This is called Idtiba.
    • Make intention of Tawaf:

    أَللَّهُمَّ اِنَّي أُرِيْدُ طَوَافَ بَيْتِكَ فَيَسِّرْهُ لِي وَتَقَبَّلْهُ مِنِّي

    “AllahummaInniUreduTawafaBaitika Fa Yassirhu Li WaTaqabbalhuMinni”

Translation: “O Allah I make intention to make Tawaf of Ka’ba. Please accept from and make it easy for me.”

    Some important rules of Tawaf:

    • Each circle of Tawaf starts and ends at the green light. On the start and finish of every circle of Tawaf, face towards the Ka’ba, raise your hands and say:

    بِسْمِ اللّهِ  اَللّهُ اَكْبَرُ  وَلِللَّهِ الْحَمْدُ

    • In the first three circles of Tawaf one should walk around the Ka’ba fast with forceful and narrow paces. This is called Ramal. If it is impossible because of the crowd then walk normal.
    • It should be remembered that pushing, hurting, or making trouble for other Muslims is Haram, while it is only Sunnah to kiss the Hajr-e-Aswad.
    • During Tawaf one should recite verses from the Holy Quran. He should pray to Allah for whatever he wishes even in his own language. There is no special Dua’a for Tawaf, one should recite 2 Kalimahs, Durood-e-Ibrahim and any Dua’as.
    • After the completion of Tawaf, cover both of the shoulders with the upper sheet of Ihram.
    • Proceed to the next step.

    Maqam Ibrahim & ZamZam

Pray 2 Rakah at Maqam Ibrahim

    • Offer two Rakah Salat of Tawaf which is Wajib-ut-Tawaf at Maqam-e-Ibrahim. If there is crowd, then offer it nearby or anywhere in the Masjid. After finishing the Salat, one should raise his hands in supplication to Allah (SWT) with humility and humbleness and make Dua for whatever he wishes.

    Drink Zamzam Water

    • After performing 2 Rakat of Tawaf, proceed towards the Zamzam well or the coolers and drink the water of Zamzam. This is Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH).
    • Proceed towards the Safa Hill to perform Sai (walking between Safa and Marwah).

    Sai between Safa and Marwah

Perform Sai between Safa and Marwah

    • One must know that from Safa to Marwah is one round and from Marwah back to Safa is the second round.
    • There are two green marks between Safa and Marwah. It is Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) to run between them with short paces as it is done in the first three rounds of Tawaf. This is only for men.
    • After the completion of each round, you should make Dua before starting another round.
    • During the Sai between Safa and Marwah, recite the 4 Kalimahs, Durood, Salawat and any Duas.

    Trim or shave hair

    • After the completion of Sai between Safa and Marwah, Make Dua to Allah (SWT) to accept your Umrah and giving you the opportunity to offer it. After completing Sai between Safa and Marwah, You should get a haircut or shave the head.
    • Women should only cut a small portion of their hair.
    • The Umrah has been completed. Now Ihram can be taken off.

    •

Hajj starts on the 8th of Dhul-Hijja and finishes on the 13th of Dhul-Hijja. I have divided in to 5 parts for easy understanding with explanation of each day rituals.

    MADINAH and The Prophet’s Masjid:

The experience in Madinah is completely different from that of Makkah. You will only find deep spiritual calmness and Peace in this city of the Prophet (PBUH). The major difference in visiting Haram in Makkah versus Madinah is that in Madinah, the men are completely separated from the women. So if you are with your wife, sister, or mother, make sure you assign a location to meet after the prayer is over.

Every time you enter or exit the Masjid, recite Durood/Salawat on the Prophet(PBUH). Make sure you have a very light weight prayer rug with you when you go for prayers. You may end up praying on a bare spot inside or outside the masjid on occasions when you are late. Especially for Zuhr and Asr prayer, note that the ground is very hot and you may not be able to perform Salat, unless you have a prayer rug. Drink Zamzam water each time after Salawat. Make sure you make Dua before you drink the water in the appropriate manner.

Access for Ziyarah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

The best time to make Ziyarah is at night. Some portions of the day, this section is closed off for the ladies to have access to the Prophet’s grave. This limits the time men have for accessing the Prophet’s grave. Also the access to Riyadul-Jannah is very difficult. Take extra precaution when you make your 2 RakatSalat in this beautiful spot on earth. Crowds are very heavy. Be patient and watch until a spot opens. Carefully access it. Do not push or trample anyone.

    General tips for Madinah:

    • Madinah: Men and women are separated. Women have to do Ziyarah in the morning and after Zuhr prayer. Designated women area. Double check the time for Ziyarah for women.
    • Lost: Meet at a convenient gate number or gate name.
    • Slippers: Keep with you at all times.
    • Prayer rug: Take with you to both harams.
